Accomplishments
The following chronological history lists my most recent data processing engagement and works its way back to my Air Force days in 1975. For each company, I have tried to summarize my contributions to their organization.   • Saved client over $600 per year by researching, recommending and moving web site to a new host.
  • Researched and recommended prudent investments in Search Engine utilization.

Led the programming team through a successful Y2K testing process which involved gathering and manipulating meaningful test data, coordinating with users, analyzing results and teleconferencing with other TRW branches across the country.

Provided detailed design, programming and test specifications in A/R and EDI for an mfg-PRO conversion in an Oracle/UNIX/Windows GUI and CHUI environment.

Designed and programmed database population and file transfer routines from Delphi to a UniFi database in a GUI environment.

 


JOHNSON CONTROLS - Milwaukee, WI 1997
PROGRESS/SYMIX Analyst/Programmer

Supported seven JCI sites in the areas of troubleshooting, programming, design, optimization and implementation.

Designed and programmed custom applications in the areas of A/P, A/R, EDI, Inventory Control, Customer Orders and Job Reporting. Redesigned reports to increase accuracy and speed.

  • Reports which took up to 8 hours to run, now run in approximately 40 minutes.
  • 30% average increase in processing speed for all rewrites.

Redesigned part-selection and pick ticket printing to be more efficient, flexible and user-friendly.

  • Standardized screen processing and program design throughout JCI.

Implemented an Import/Export Manifesting subsystem. Designed and programmed a 'mini' subsystem for maintaining and reporting 'Pay-On-Receipt' customers and invoices for JCI Corporate as part of their Advanced Order Management System (AOMS).

Designed, programmed and ran One-Time-Only applications:

  • Computerized transfer of parts from Mexico to Kentucky.
  • Recalculate and report Employee Savings Bond purchases after a system crash.
  • Accurately gather State and Federal tax information for the previous seven years in conjunction with a tax audit.

Documented and submitted suggestions for improving system performance.

Provided programming support for an international system conversion from CICS to mfg-PRO.

Developed and customized programs for a highly-modified mfg-PRO database in the areas of A/P, A/R, Shipping and Inventory Control.

Designed and programmed an on-line multi-user custom manufacturing system in a UNIX/PROGRESS environment to replace an IBM System III cardpunch.

Provided modem and on-site support for a customized version of the SYMIX Manufacturing Control System.

Recommended and implemented program changes to increase processing speed. Wrote custom programs to provide critical management information. Evaluated database design and recommended and implemented changes.

  • Reports run five to ten times faster.
  • Increased data reliability.

Provided support for a small business with 20 PROGRESS/SYMIX clients.

    Designed and programmed menus and reports to support Standard's highly modified version of AST's DISPATCH-1 Service Management System.

    Developed a method of reviewing reports on-line for accuracy and content before making hardcopies.

    • Lengthy reports need not be regenerated for printer output.

     

    DAYTON SHOWCASE COMPANY - Dayton, OH 1992
    SYMIX/PROGRESS Systems Consultant

    Performed System and Database Administration duties. Monitored, evaluated and tuned PROGRESS and UNIX system parameters to increase functionality and performance.

    • Increased database performance as much as 30%.
    • Eliminated system crashes and database failures.

    Recommended hardware, software and procedural changes to consolidate six databases into two, thereby eliminating four database brokers.

    • Postponed $40,000 in additional hardware expenditures.

    Studied and documented paperwork flow and data entry procedures. Made recommendations for improvement.

    Redesigned and optimized PROGRESS reports to run correctly against the SYMIX Version 2.6 system. Designed and coded new report programs to provide additional management information.

     


    MIM INDUSTRIES - Centerville, OH 2001
    UNIX/SYMIX/PROGRESS Systems Consultant.

    Maintained user and device accounts. Reviewed and approved database work requests. Scheduled workload and directed the activities of programmers and consultants concerning database development and modification. Monitored system activity and tuned system and database parameters to achieve optimum levels of performance.

    • Increased overall database performance by 30%.

    Consulted with hardware/software vendors concerning system implementation and upgrade. Installed hardware and software upgrades and replacements per vendor recommendation and under vendor guidance.

    Customized SYMIX programs and file specifications to provide additional hardcopy and on-line information, and reduce operator keystrokes.

    • Reduced job routing errors.
    • Improved job cost verification.
    • Increased parts cross-reference lookup speed.

    Redesigned PROGRESS reports and utilities to run in UNIX batch mode under cron, thereby automating daily, weekly, bi-monthly, monthly and special report generation.

    • Performance-degrading reports and utilities ran during the periods of least on-line activity, without human intervention.

    Designed and implemented programs to load parts list information from price book files supplied by manufacturers and resellers into the SYMIX database for on-line lookup.

    • Saved sales personnel up to 200 price book lookups daily.

    Designed a Problem-Tracking database to record SYMIX changes from request to analysis through resolution.

     


    GE AIRCRAFT ENGINES - Evendale, OH 1989-1990
    FOCUS/SQL Database Administrator/Analyst/Programmer
    VM Systems Administrator for IBM 4361
    Liaison to IBM 3090 VM Techniques Group

    Assigned IBM user accounts. Allocated disk space and processing priorities. Ran regularly scheduled diskpack-to-tape backups. Established FOCUS SU Machines. Developed REXX files to link users to database accounts, initiate processing and transfer files to/from PCs and between mainframes. Monitored and analyzed system performance and made recommendations for improvement. Developed system documentation. Researched and recommended PC LAN hardware and software options.

    • Coordinated the transfer of 9 departmental IBM 4361 and PC databases to the corporate IBM 3090.
    • Saved $16,000 per year in DBMS software and support costs.

    Implemented the Material Analysis Engineers' (MAE) Database which provides on-line data entry and retrieval, strict data validation through multiple cross-references, and field-sensitive HELP.

    • Reduced MAE paperwork by 50%.
    • Compounded results by selling idea to 2 other engineering organizations: Behavior and Technology Engineering.

    Designed a database that tracked heat treatment and parts distribution information among several PC spreadsheets and mainframe files, pinpointing the disposition of engine parts according to quality control inspection results.

    • Helped determine the cause of the plane crash at Sioux City, Iowa in 1989.

    Redesigned and integrated several mainframe and PC databases and applications.

    • Reduced object code by 32% for PC applications.
    • Updates and retrievals ran twice as fast.

     

    GARFIELD SHOES - Tipp City, OH 1993
    System Developer

    Designed, coded and documented a BASIC Inventory Control System for a nationwide shoe retailer. Automated 4 sales ranking reports.

    • Provided centralized inventory tracking for 25 outlets.

     


    REYNOLDS+REYNOLDS - Dayton, OH 1988
    Help Desk Operator

    Provided nation wide modem and telephone support for all registered users of Reynolds' AUTOMOTIVE DEALERSHIP SYSTEM. Resolved problems by implementing system 'patches' or making system changes. Logged problems, solutions and suggestions for on-line lookup.

     


    NCR CORPORATION - Dayton, OH 1988
    Lead Programmer

    Designed and tested the QuickBASIC 'ROADRUNNER' Retail System POS Editor Files Update subsystem.

    • Expedited scheduled introduction of NEW customizable EDITOR.

     


    J. C. PENNEY - Dayton, OH 1986-1987
    Lead Programmer

    Designed COBOL file specifications and relations for the AUTOMATED CATALOG SYSTEM. Implemented a method of coding file access routines which provides consistency among all system modules and a basis for standardized error handling. Developed utilities and reports. Provided system-level client documentation during all phases of development.

    Redesigned, coded and documented the File Management subsystem which controls file access, aging, purging and directory management functions. Designed and coded the On-line Sales Transaction Processing and Associate Training subsystems. Modified several programs to include APPC for backup and file transfer purposes.

    • 70% reduction in executable code size.
    • Fourfold increase in processing speed.
    • Improved functionality.

     

    JACK EGGART AND ASSOCIATES - Centerville, OH 1985
    Programmer

    Designed and coded several management-level COBOL programs which were incorporated into a nationally marketed chain store MIS.

    • Provided time-critical, cost-effective support for a small business.

     


    NCR CORPORATION - Dayton, OH 1985
    System Developer

    Designed the NCR DEALERSHIP MARKETING PERFORMANCE SYSTEM; a PC/FOCUS database which monitors actual sales vs.commitment, allowing analysts to determine marketing strategies. Integrated a COBOL multiple-key sort/verify/modify utility as a pre-process to loading database records.

    • 85% (6.5 hours) reduction in batch processing time per day.

     


    NCR CORPORATION - Dayton, OH 1985
    Programmer

    Designed PROGRESS screen I/O programs to capture and report sales commission information for their IN-HOUSE SALES COMPENSATION SYSTEM.

    • My very first experience with PROGRESS! The love affair begins!

     


    OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS - Toledo, OH 1984
    System Consultant

    Worked closely with data entry personnel to develop a FOCUS customer rebate subsystem. The system included on-line help and screen preferences, virtually designed by the data entry personnel themselves.

    • Errors were reported and corrected immediately.
    • Data entry personnel became more comfortable and confident with on-line systems.
    • Rebate information was captured and processed 10 times faster.
    • Customer rebates were issued the same day.

     


    NCR CORPORATION - Dayton, OH 1983-1984
    System Developer

    Designed, coded and documented the LEAD REFERRAL SYSTEM; an on-line COBOL ISAM system which provides tracking and reporting of customer leads referred from sales representatives. Automated the selection, sorting, formatting and forwarding of Central Electronic Mail Service (CEMS) data to various branch managers

    • Saved administrators 3 hours per day over the manual method.
    • Portable subsystem used at COMDEX-84 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
    • Received "NCR PC" pin in recognition of achievements.

     


    ALCOA ALUMINUM - STOLLE CORPORATION - Sydney, OH 1983
    Programmer

    Developed FOCUS tables and programs to collect information for a new aluminum coating database.

    Developed Pascal programs to gather, store, and report coating treatments at real-time.

     


    RETS TECHNICAL CENTER - Centerville, OH 1983
    Computer Programming Instructor

    Taught 2 groups of computer science students fundamental data processing concepts using COBOL, BASIC, FORTRAN, PASCAL and Z80 Assembler. Administered tests and quizzes. Evaluated proficiency by assigning and grading practical programming projects. Helped select textbooks and training software.

    • Stressed structured design and programming techniques.
    • Automated the student grading system.
